Kids prefer to dress up like grownups (by dreamcoo.com)

Kids are in step with the grown-ups when it comes to style. Kiddie clothes don't interest them anymore

Katrina Kaif may have been crowned the Indian Barbie, but was it too late? As just when the grown-ups have taken to the fashion in kiddy world, they themselves have gone beyond the laces and frills.

It's no longer the pink frilly frocks and flouncing skirts that adorn the wardrobe of kids now. They are now aping the adults; sharp and straight cuts are often reflected in their outfits.

Long as well as short skirts, skinny jeans, short dresses, and even, Jodhpuri breeches are sneaking into the cabinets of the little ones. Capris and three quarters, teamed with short printed t-shirts are extremely popular. They are also veering towards graphic print t-shirt, in addition to the existing perennial floral favourites.

Explains designer Abhishek Dutta, "Kids are very demanding now. They are the real customers, and have a good idea of what is in and out. So, while doing up their line, for girls we concentrate mainly on asymmetrical hem lines, drape detailing, and for boys on bandh galas, Jodhpuri breeches and even, a fad with the adults."

The kids wear market is a direct reflection of the hottest trends making rounds in the adult clothing market. In fact, with parents choosing their kids clothing early on, they help to develop a child's fashion sense very early in life.

Adds designer Falguni Peacock, "Parents, today, look for easy and comfortable clothing for their children. The idea is to dress smart. This is mainly because a lot of international brands have come into the Indian market, influencing the dressing style on international lines. Shift and smart cut dresses, and track pants and hooded jackets are extremely popular."Flat Sandals

Designer Priyadarshini Rao attributes this change to the exposure that kids get today. "Children, today, are more particular about how they dress, mainly due to the exposure they get. They do not want to wear frumpy clothes, and prefer comfort clothing. From frills, the kids have graduated to straighter lines," she says.
